Essentially, it comes down to this: knowing where your purchases come from; being a slightly more informed and curious customer; looking deeper into the value of a product as well as its price. Unbelievably cheap products are that way for a reason, and there are plenty of those online as well - as most of us have probably learned. At the same time a high price does not ensure quality or ethical business practices either, as many a brand name has been called out on the use of sweatshops on the other side of the world. Sadly, the corporate world overwhelmingly focuses on making profits for shareholders above all else. Make your dollars count; just as consumer demand is putting pressure on companies to reveal the use of GMO's, let's not forget the other elements of playing fair. Fair pay; fair working conditions; fair trade.

I'm terribly saddened to see Ten Thousand Villages close their Canadian operations. Tenthousandvillages.ca will continue to function until May 31, 2020 (use code Goodbye60 for a 60% discount) and a handful of stores across the country will remain open due to a different management structure.
