Not a rich person, or a corporate entity... just an individual like you, struggling to make ends meet, and hopefully create some kind of success in this life. I'm still paying off student loans and other debts, working in the world and trying to make an honest living. I will make a small commission from most, though not all, of the links on this website, and thank you very sincerely for your support. | Welcome to Artsciencespirit.com The artsciencespirit story revolves around the many aspects of well-being. On one level this means striving for personal health - mind, body and soul - and branches out to include our connection with all living things. Well, "naturally" we like to practice what we preach :) To the best of our abilities, we have been integrating healthier products and practices into our lifestyle over the course of the last few years while dealing with a number of chronic health conditions. Following are a few snapshots of natural remedies and organic products that we have tried and can recommend from personal experience. Savoring the Day has been my personal bible for learning about how to use essential oils - full of stories and tips on how to easily integrate aromatherapy into your daily routine. The book also includes ayurvedic recipes, and lots of good advice on creating a healthier, more balanced lifestyle. Lavera Naturkosmetik - This is a product line I am particularly pleased with. I have tried the liquid foundation, pressed powder, loose powder, lipstick, eyeliner and mascara and would recommend them all. I have very oily problem skin and these cosmetics have worked well for me in their "smudge-proofness" and shine resistance. I first discovered this line while shopping at London Drugs (where samples were available) but have since found them online as well at Lavera Skin Care or Well.ca Organic wear - I was curious about these for awhile when they appeared in the local pharmacy as part of the larger Physician's Formula product line (note: regular Physician's Formula products are NOT organic). I have since tried the liquid foundation, pressed powder, loose powder, powder blush, cover up stick, and mineral eye shadow (not shown). I use the tinted moisturizer (like a light coverage foundation), eye shadow and eye liner daily. The products are more affordable than most other organics I have found and are available on Well.ca Healthy choices for your lips - by Burt's Bees, alba, and e.l.f. including cooling mint: alba, and the Burt's Bees shimmers with spf: alba (spf 18) and e.l.f. (spf 15 except the clear gloss which does not have spf) no animal testing: all organic: only alba contains mostly organic ingredients. Burt's Bees is 100% natural, but not certified organic (an explanation of their philosophy behind the natural vs organic debate is available on their website at Burt's Bees. A range of Burt's Bees products is available onWell.ca e.l.f. is not natural or organic and is a brand I checked out as a low-cost cruelty-free option. Clean choices for your face - Burt's Bees Soap Bark & Chamomile Deep Cleansing Cream, Druide Face Toner (Chamomile and Rice Proteins), Desert Essence Foaming Bamboo Face Scrub (with bamboo, olive seed and tea tree); Kimberly Sayer Ultra Light Facial Moisturizer - SPF 25; Kimberly Sayer Botanical Astringent (for oily, acne & normal skin), and - organic cotton pads. These are all remarkably "clean" skincare products - all that remains is to find out what works best for you! Occasionally I have been known to get so excited at the discovery of a natural or organic product that I forget to make sure it is right for my skin type (hint: this cannot be disregarded, all products do not work equally for everyone's different needs). Burt's Bees and Desert Essence: This is a combination I have found particularly effective - by using the cream and scrub together I find I can do more "scrubbing" (this scrub is almost like a sand and otherwise falls quickly into the sink) and the cleansing cream has a pleasant, calming effect- I've had better results reducing breakouts and minimizing pores with this combination than almost anything else I've ever tried. Burt's Bees Soap Bark & Chamomile Deep Cleansing Cream is available on well.ca and while browsing there I discovered some scrubs by Burt's Bees that I have not been able to find locally, if you prefer an all-in-one deep-cleansing product :) e.l.f. brand: nail polish, nail polish remover pads, lip balm, mineral eye shadow, and mineral foundation powder. One of the brilliant things about mineral makeup is its "natural spf protection" - this foundation powder offers spf 15, making daily sun protection a little bit easier. Mineral Foundation - SPF 15 - 100% natural minerals - no parabens - no preservatives - no chemical dyes. Active ingredients - Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Oxide. Inactive ingredients: Mica, Bismuth, Oxychloride (Cl 77163), Titanium Dioxide (Cl 77891), Tocopheryl Acetate, Caprylyl Glycol, Silk Powder, Boron Nitride. May contain: Iron Oxides (Cl 77491 77492 77499), Carmine (Cl 75470). Concerned about aluminium or other harmful ingredients in your deodorant or antipersperant? The products we use daily have been linked to cancer and other serious health issues. Consider these healthier choices instead: Natural Scents. Natural and drug-free alternatives for pain relief: Arnica Pain Relief Cream - for minor bruises, strains and sprains O24 Fibromyalgia spray by swissmedica - a patented blend of peppermint, rosemary, eucalyptus and camphor oils. This can be used effectively for relief from numerous ailments including muscle aches, headache, and sinus issues. These oils can also ease feelings of anxiety and depression. It may be possible to blend your own oils at a lower price, but the convenience of this spray (safe for skin) make it a remedy I've used a lot. Available at most Canadian pharmacies. Zostrix High Potency Capsaicin Cream - a very potent heating cream. Sinus Relief and Snore Eaz-zy Gel by Aroma Crystal Therapy Ltd Migrastick by Arkopharma - a blend of peppermint and lavender oils - a perfectly convenient size, I keep this with me at work and while travelling. Cold mask by The Body Shop Lavender-scented sleep mask by Urban Spa (now at well.ca!)Although I have not found any one cure-all for chronic pain, I am grateful for natural products that provide some relief without side effects. These were all picked up at the local pharmacy, except for the Aroma Crystal product and the masks (from specialty shops), and work using natural ingredients. As recent news stories about the dangers of overusing pain medications remind us - it is essential that we make safe, responsible choices in our daily healthcare - become your own expert! A selection of products by J.R. Watkins Natural Apothecary, including the best-smelling lemon skin cream I've ever encountered (made from all-natural shea and cocoa butters) - it smells like lemon cake!! No animal testing. (Although Watkins has a "freedom code" from toxic ingredients, this one does contain methylparaben and propylparaben). |
