I've been shopping on the Greater Good Network's Hunger Site for many years, where every purchase helps fund cups of food for people in need. I have bought tunics, leggings, sweaters, jewelry and other gift items and been consistently satisfied with the colorful clothing found here. They also offer a Giving Back category where you can add donations to a wide variety of charitable causes to your purchase. A number of household items (usually breakable) are available in the USA only, so I normally limit my browsing to clothing and accessories. In addition to Hunger, the network has shopping sites devoted to veterans, animal rescue, the rainforest, literacy, and several health issues. Some good deals can be found in their Outlet section, as well as frequent sales, and organic, fair trade and eco-friendly items are available.
Novica is the National Geographic's online global marketplace featuring handmade items from artisans around the world. I have shopped here several times over the past five years or so for sweaters and jewelry, and a beautiful earring tree. The site allows you to shop by cause or region or simply browse the hundreds of fair trade clothing and gift items, including unique home decor. Duties and import taxes vary on orders shipped outside of the USA, but this information should be visible when you place your order. You will find high quality gifts here, and earn rewards once you become a customer, making it a worthwhile destination for special occasions.
At WWF there are numerous options for charitable giving, including donations, wildlife adoptions (with photo card or plush animal toy) or apparel and gifts with their signature panda logo. For the members of my family who appreciate cute things, I have made it an annual Christmas tradition to purchase the plush animals, complete with adoption certificates in their names (this option is also tax-deductible).
Ten Thousand Villages is the oldest and largest fair trade organization in North America and in Canada we are fortunate to have both their brick-and-mortar locations and their fabulous website from which to order a large range of gifts and decor. With affordable prices and flat-rate shipping, Ten Thousand Villages remains one of my favorite gift-shopping destinations. Hand-crafted jewelry, fashion accessories, Christmas ornaments, inventive recycled gifts and more.
